Photography has always been my way to connect with the world around me. My passport into understanding new places and cultures. Though I may not always speak fluently the languages of these places, I knew my photos would speak for me.
In recent years, my once obsession in photo making became strained. I struggled to maintain the passion or motivation to focus on creating images as I once did. I started questioning myself and my energy.
When Martina approached me to come to her horse farm to do some photos for her website my heart leapt at the opportunity. Having visited the beautiful facility before I knew it could be just the project to rekindle my creative fervor.
At almost the exact moment, doubt set in. Instantly I started questioning myself and my energy. My inner dialogue began to attempt to convince me that “the horses will immediately sense my energy is off. I will disrupt the shoot.” I am not the person for this shoot.
During a following phone conversation with the very intuitive Martina, she sensed my hesitation, so I took a chance and told her exactly how I was feeling. To my surprise she didn’t get frustrated and decide to go hire a different photographer, she reached a compassionate hand to me.
We made a date for me to come out to the equestrian center and meet her horses. No pressure. Let them be the judge of my energy. The entire process was incredibly revealing and definitely inspiring. Martina’s empathic presence and enthusiasm for helping others through the gift of connection with her horses created an incredibly healing atmosphere.
From the first moment I reached out to touch Martina’s gorgeous white horse Jasmim, he assured me with a long deep exhale, that there was no issues with my energy. He spoke clearly through his gestures what actions I should take to restore my creative balance. He would repeatedly tap on my head with his chin or he would glance deeply at himself in a mirror on the wall of the arena. The interpretation for me was quite evident, “Get out of your head and look within yourself.”
In photography as in all art, you are taught the strength of any composition or frame is your foundation. Create a strong foundation and then build your image from there. As I began shooting the photos of Martina working in unison with her horses, I would repeatedly exclaim “This is a beautiful frame.” Meaning the photo had all the elements to create an emotive image. Martina helped me realize that Jasmim was telling me I have the power to curate my life as I curate each photographic frame. Allowing only what is best for me to remain in my frame.
Something definitely shifted for me through this experience. The moment I got home, my husband asked me when I was going back. It had restored a smile he hadn’t seen in a long time.
All I know is I am much more protective of my time and energy and what and who I allow in my frame.
